There's Still Time to Make an Impact

March 25th, 2011 Comment

Thanks to all who came out last night to Ray's Boathouse for another fabulous Twestival Seattle! It was a gorgeous spring evening overlooking the still Puget Sound waters while Seattle's social media community come together to support a remarkable organization, FareStart.

Couldn't make it last night? No worries! You can still join the cause by donating online. Whatever amount you can give, we'll make sure 100% of it gets to FareStart, and we'll certainly give you some mad Twitter love as a token of our appreciation!

To make a difference in the lives of those in need, donate herehttp://bit.ly/twestivalseagive

Can you help us reach our online goal of raising $2,000 for FareStart on FirstGiving? *Please note that this is IN ADDITION to the $4,780 we've already raised in ticket sales that go directly to FareStart

So far, we've raised $4,780 in ticket sales, $750 in raffle sales (some of which went to hard costs of the event), and $1,080 in the silent auction. All told, we've raised well over $6,000 for FareStart as a result of Twestival Seattle!

We'll post official photos of the night's highlights on our Facebook page soon, but in the meantime, here are a few winners, courtesy of @RL_Wood:

3 Reasons to be a Gold Donor at Seattle Twestival 2011

March 20th, 2011 Comment

Seattle Twestival 2011 is less than a week away, and we still have a few tickets left for the event. But why settle for any old ticket when you can get the coveted Gold level ticket? Here's why it pays to attend as a Gold Donor for Seattle Twestival 2011 this year:

1) Support FareStart and help the homeless find jobs

FareStart is a fantastic organization that offers a 16-week training program to prepare homeless and disadvantaged men and women for jobs in the food services industry. FareStart was just named winner of the prestigious James Beard Foundation Humanitarian of the Year award, and has transformed the lives of nearly 5,000 people since its inception.

Becoming a Gold Donor means giving $100 to an amazing organization dedicated to giving back to the Seattle community and giving the homeless a fighting chance.

2) Get featured in Social Media Bingo

Last year's social media bingo was a huge hit at Twestival. What is Social Media Bingo? We take a 5x5 bingo card, but instead of numbers, we put the twitter avatars and handles of well-known Seattle social media influencers, and to win, an attendee must find and get the signature of a row (up, down, diagonal) of those featured avatars.

As a Gold Donor, you will be one of the faces on the Twestival Social Media Bingo*, and the 150 attendees will seek you out at the event - a great conversation starter and way for you to easily meet many other Twestival-goers.
*unless you'd prefer to remain anonymous, of course.

3) Free stuff!

If that's not enough, we're giving out free goodie bags to our Gold Donors, including a limited edition Fable III wireless Xbox 360 controller (MSRP $59.99). The value of our sponsored merchandise is enough to pay for the ticket itself, and you get to go home with an exclusive bag of great stuff from the Seattle Twestival 2011.

We really look forward to seeing you all at Twestival on March 24th, and donating at the Gold level will help us to reach our donation goals this year, and will aid FareStart in its goal of eliminating homelessness in King County. Buy your tickets here.

FareStart Gives Homeless a Fighting Chance

March 18th, 2011 Comment
If you’ve dined out in Seattle, chances are you’ve encountered the culinary creations of a FareStart grad. Graduates of FareStart, a culinary job training and placement program for homeless and disadvantaged individuals and this year’s Seattle Twestival beneficiary, put their culinary skills to work at hundreds of local restaurants including The Metropolitan Grill, Salty’s on Alki, and the W Hotel, just to name a few.

Started in 1988 by chef David Lee as a meal service for homeless individuals, FareStart has evolved into a multi-faceted organization that now provides a 16 week training program that prepares homeless and disadvantaged men and women for jobs in the food services industry, as well as a Barista Training and Education Program for homeless, runaway, and street youth.

FareStart operates two of its own dining facilities, FareStart Restaurant, a full service restaurant serving lunch and dinner and FareStart Café at 2100, an on-the-job training site for youth enrolled in the Barista Training Program. Both establishments are highly rated, which isn’t surprising, considering the dedication of FareStart trainers like Chef Sam.

“The tools we give them have to be the very best because we need to give them a fighting chance, a fair start, a chance to start again.” An overwhelming majority, 80%, of FareStart graduates find employment within 90 days of graduating.

To learn more about FareStart’s programs and find out how you can get involved, visit their website, www.farestart.org or connect with them on Twitter. Better yet, see... er... taste first-hand what FareStart is all about at the FareStart Restaurant.
